Pride Publics exhibition tour – closing weekend

Join us for an exhibition walkthrough with “Pride Publics: Words and Actions” curator Rubén Esparza and producer Umi Hsu. This exhibition tour will give you stories and insights into each artist, their practice, and their contribution to the LGBTQ+ art and activism world. Visitors will have an opportunity to ask questions about the artwork and artists featured in the exhibition.

This one-time exhibition tour is offered on the closing date of the exhibition on Saturday, October 30, 3pm, at the installation site at the Los Angeles State Historic Park.

Location: 1315 N Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. The exhibition is mounted on the fence on the south end of the park, near the Welcome Center, facing the interior of the park.

Exhibition parking is available on the mulch area in front of the park facing Spring Street.

About the Exhibition

With 28 large-scale wheatpasted posters installed in a public site, “Pride Publics: Words and Actions” stages a visual dialogue between historical and contemporary LGBTQ+ changemakers. This exhibition is organized by One Institute and curated by Rubén Esparza. The installation is on view at the Los Angeles State Historic Park through Sunday October 31, 2021.

The exhibition opening for Pride Publics: Words and Actions will showcase artists highlighted in the exhibition. The opening will take place at Los Angeles Historic Park on Saturday October 9 starting 3pm. The opening program features new, site-specific performances by performance artists Yozmit, Marval A Rex, and Peter Kalisch. 

About the Performances 

Transgender singer-songwriter, performance artist, and designer Yozmit will present WALK – a silent, durational, meditative walk in monochromatic and sculptural costumes which will lead to a live performance of songs from her recent album, Sun Moon Door.   

Performance artist and curator Marval A Rex becomes Marilyn Monroe (or does she become him?) in MARILYN MON REX, a timed, performative meditation drenched in the violence of “fame,” exploring the psycho-spatial ramifications of Hollywood on urban working populations in Los Angeles.     

Using the Los Angeles State Park as a symbolic jump-off, 25-year old visual/ performance artist Peter Kalisch will explore the lessons he learned through last year’s intense journey of self reflection, as noise, chaos, pain, struggle, heartbreak have transformed into growth. 

About the Exhibition 

The outdoor exhibition “Pride Publics: Words and Actions” will be on view at Los Angeles State Historic Park. It will run from Saturday October 9 – Sunday October 24, 8AM until sunset. This temporary public art installation will be mounted on the fence on the south end of the park, near the Welcome Center, facing the interior of the park. With 28 large-scale wheatpaste posters installed in a public site, this exhibit stages a visual dialogue between historical and contemporary LGBTQ+ changemakers.

Bring a picnic blanket or a lawn chair to enjoy the performances in the park. Event parking is available the mulch area alongside Spring Street. If you have any accessibility needs, please indicate them in the RSVP form.

One Institute, in partnership with Pride Poets, invites the community for an afternoon of live poetry-writing in response to our current exhibition Pride Publics: Words and Actions. Pride Poets will write custom poems for visitors relating to the exhibition theme and the visitors’ experience of the artwork, potentially commenting on the place of queer and trans elders and lineages in their lives. Works created may be shared at a culminating Pride Poets virtual reading event with LA County on June 22.

ABOUT PRIDE POETS

For the last two years, Pride Poets has brought together LGBTQ+ literary community and members of the public. In 2019 we popped up with typewriters around West Hollywood throughout the month of Pride, crafting over 600 new poems for passersby commemorating their personal queer histories. In 2020 our virtual Pride readings featured 100+ LGBTQ+ writers and notable historian Lillian Faderman (Gay LA). For 2021, our Poetry Hotline will invite callers to receive a custom poem over the phone from June 11-13.
